What to Bring to Kentucky Wellness Center

Packing for residential mental health treatment can feel unfamiliar. Unlike a vacation or a hospital stay, you’re preparing for an experience that’s somewhere in between – a structured therapeutic environment where you’ll also be living day-to-day for several weeks or longer.
This guide will help you pack thoughtfully so you have everything you need to feel comfortable while respecting the guidelines that keep our therapeutic community safe and focused on recovery. If you have questions about specific items not covered here, our admissions team is available 24/7 at (270) 355-7231 to help.

Planning

How Long Should I Pack For?

The length of your stay depends on your individual treatment needs, clinical progress, and insurance coverage. While your treatment team will provide more specific guidance, here’s a general framework:

Stay Length

Typical Duration

Packing Recommendation

Short-term

2-4 weeks

Pack for 7-10 days (laundry available)

Standard

30-60 days

Pack for 10-14 days (laundry available)

Extended

60-90+ days

Pack for 14 days (laundry available)

Our facility has laundry services available, so you don’t need to bring enough clothing for your entire stay. Most clients find that packing for about one to two weeks – with a mix of casual, comfortable clothes – works well regardless of how long they’ll be with us.

If you’re being admitted on short notice through our same-day admissions process, don’t worry about having everything perfect. Pack the essentials and know that you can have family members bring additional items later or purchase basics nearby if needed.

What to Bring

Clothing and Footwear

Comfort is the priority. You’ll be participating in therapy sessions, group activities, meals, and possibly outdoor recreation – not attending formal events. Pack clothes that make you feel at ease and allow you to move freely.

  • Comfortable bottoms – Sweatpants, yoga pants, jeans, shorts, depending on season (5-7)
  • Pajamas or sleepwear – Whatever you normally sleep in (2-3 sets)
  • Underwear and socks – Enough for a week plus a few extra pairs
  • Supportive bra or undergarments – If applicable
  • Light jacket or cardigan – Indoor temperatures vary
  • Seasonal outerwear – Weather-appropriate coat, hat, gloves if needed
  • Workout or athletic clothes – If you plan to exercise (optional but encouraged)

Clothing Guidelines

Please note the following restrictions:

  • Avoid clothing with drug or alcohol references, explicit language, or violent imagery
  • Avoid clothing with strings, cords, or drawstrings that

could pose safety concerns (we can provide alternatives if needed)

  • Leave expensive or designer items at home to prevent loss or damage
  • All clothing should be appropriate for a mixed-gender therapeutic environment

If you arrive with items that don’t meet our guidelines, staff will work with you to find solutions – we won’t send you away over a hoodie with a drawstring. Safety modifications can often be made on-site.

Restricted Items

For safety reasons, the following items are not permitted or require special handling:

  • Glass containers – Please use plastic containers when possible
  • Mouthwash containing alcohol

  • Medications – See medication section below; all medications are managed by medical staff

If you have specific grooming needs that require restricted items (such as an electric razor for medical reasons), discuss this with your admissions coordinator before arrival.

Necessities

Medications and Medical Necessities

Proper medication management is essential for your safety and treatment success. Please bring all medications and medical items as follows:

Medications

  • All current prescription medications – In their original pharmacy containers with labels intact
  • List of all medications – Including dosages, prescribing doctors, and pharmacy information
  • Over-the-counter medications you use regularly – These will be reviewed and stored by medical staff

Important: All medications – prescription and over-the-counter – will be collected upon arrival and managed by our medical team. This ensures proper dosing, prevents interactions with treatment medications, and maintains safety. You will receive your medications as prescribed; they’re simply administered by nursing staff rather than self-managed.

If you take controlled substances, bring documentation from your prescribing physician. Our psychiatrist will review all medications and may make adjustments as part of your personalized treatment plan.

Medical Devices and Necessities

  • Eyeglasses and/or contact lenses – Plus backup glasses if you have them
  • Hearing aids – With extra batteries
  • CPAP or BiPAP machine – If you use one for sleep apnea
  • Prosthetics or orthotics – Anything you use daily
  • Medical ID bracelet – If you wear one
  • Diabetes supplies – Glucose monitor, insulin (will be managed by medical staff)
  • EpiPen – If prescribed (will be stored by medical staff and available in emergencies)

Medical Documentation

Helpful but not required:

  • Insurance cards (primary and secondary if applicable)
  • Photo ID (driver’s license or state ID)
  • List of current healthcare providers with contact information
  • Recent lab results or medical records, if available
  • Vaccination records if readily accessible
  • Advance directive or healthcare proxy documents, if you have them
Get Comfortable

Comfort Items and Personal Belongings

Treatment is more than therapy sessions – it’s also about creating an environment where you can feel safe enough to do difficult emotional work. Personal comfort items can help.

01

Encouraged Items

  • Photos of loved ones – Framed photos or prints (not in glass frames)
  • Journal or notebook – Many clients find writing therapeutic
  • Books – For leisure reading during downtime
  • Spiritual or religious items – Bible, prayer beads, meditation materials, etc.
  • Stuffed animal or comfort object – There’s no judgment here; many adults find these soothing
  • Blanket or pillow from home – If it helps you sleep
  • Art supplies – Colored pencils, sketchbooks (no sharp implements)
  • Puzzle books – Crosswords, sudoku, word searches

Policies

Electronics Policy

Technology can be both helpful and harmful during treatment. Our electronics policy balances the benefits of staying connected with the need to focus on recovery.

Permitted Electronics

  • Cell phone – With limitations (see below)
  • Tablet or e-reader – Kindle, iPad, etc.
  • Laptop computer – For specific approved purposes
  • MP3 player or iPod – For music without internet access
  • Electric razor – May require staff storage; available upon request
  • CPAP machine – Medical necessity
  • Charging cables – For your permitted devices

How Electronics Are Managed

Cell phones and internet-capable devices are collected upon admission and stored securely. They are available during designated times for:

  • Phone calls with approved contacts
  • Video calls with family (scheduled through staff)
  • Checking important messages or handling urgent matters

This isn’t punishment – it’s protection. Constant connectivity to the stresses of outside life interferes with the therapeutic process. Many clients initially resist this policy and later describe it as one of the most valuable parts of treatment: the gift of disconnection.

You’ll have access to facility phones for calls, and staff can reach you in genuine emergencies. Your loved ones can also contact our main line at (270) 355-7231 if they need to reach you urgently.

Prohibited Electronics

  • Video game consoles
  • Drones or cameras (beyond phone cameras)
  • Smart watches with cellular capability (regular fitness trackers may be permitted)
  • Recording devices

Packing Tips

Packing Tips From Our Team

After helping thousands of clients prepare for admission, our admissions team has gathered some practical wisdom:

Do

Don't

If you’re being admitted urgently: Same-day admissions sometimes mean packing quickly without this guide in hand. Focus on: medications in original bottles, ID and insurance card, a few changes of clothes, and phone chargers. Everything else can be figured out later. Your well-being matters more than having the perfect suitcase.

Preparing Emotionally

Preparing Emotionally (Not Just Physically)

Packing your bags is the easy part. Preparing yourself emotionally for treatment is harder – and equally important.

Here are some ways to prepare in the days before admission:

Brain research icon. Green circle with brain outline and magnifying glass, representing cognitive search and AI research.

Write a letter to yourself about why you're choosing treatment and what you hope to gain. Read it when things get hard.

Say temporary goodbyes to people who matter. Let them know you're doing something important for your health.

Tie up loose ends that will worry you - autopay bills, delegate responsibilities, create a plan for your absence.

Lower your expectations for what treatment will feel like. It's not a spa retreat; it's hard work. But it's worth it.

Trust the process even when you don't fully understand it yet.

If you’re feeling anxious, scared, or having second thoughts – that’s normal. Almost everyone feels that way before admission. Our team is available around the clock to talk through your concerns: (270) 355-7231.

If You Forget Something

It happens. You’ll arrive and realize you forgot your favorite sweatshirt, your glasses cleaner, or something else that feels important. Here’s what to do:

Other clients sometimes have extras, and there's usually a way to obtain necessities.

Forgetting something is not a crisis. Our team has helped people through much bigger challenges than a missing phone charger.

FAQ’s

What to Bring Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I bring my cell phone?

Yes, but with limitations. Cell phones are collected upon admission and stored securely. You’ll have access during designated times for calls with approved contacts and handling urgent matters. This policy helps you focus on treatment without the distractions and stressors of constant connectivity. Most clients come to appreciate this structure.

What if I need something I didn't pack?

Family members can bring items during visiting hours, or you can have items mailed to the facility (packages are inspected for safety). Many basic necessities are available on-site, and staff can help you obtain anything essential. Don’t let fear of forgetting something prevent you from starting treatment.

Can family members visit and bring me things?

Yes. We encourage family involvement in treatment, including visits during designated hours. Family members can bring additional clothing, comfort items, or other permitted belongings during these visits. Your admissions coordinator will provide specific information about visiting policies and schedules. Visit our Family Resources page for more information.

Are there laundry facilities?

Yes. Our facility has laundry services available, so you don’t need to pack enough clothes for your entire stay. Most clients do laundry once or twice per week. Detergent is provided.

What happens to restricted items if I accidentally bring them?

If you arrive with items that aren’t permitted, staff will collect and store them securely. They’ll be returned to you at discharge or can be given to a family member to take home. You won’t be penalized for honest mistakes – just work with staff to resolve the situation.

Can I bring food from home?

Outside food and beverages are generally not permitted, with limited exceptions for medical or religious dietary needs. Our facility provides all meals and snacks, with accommodations for dietary restrictions, allergies, and preferences. If you have specific nutritional requirements, discuss them with your admissions coordinator before arrival.

What if I'm being admitted on short notice and can't pack properly?

Focus on the essentials: medications in original bottles, ID and insurance cards, a few changes of comfortable clothes, and any medical devices you need daily. Everything else can be obtained or sent later. Same-day admissions happen when clinical need is urgent – your health takes priority over having the perfect suitcase. Our team will help you figure out logistics after you arrive.
